As a child
I loved to play
With friends of every sort;
It mattered not their age or race
Each one was my cohort.
I trusted all who came my way
Acceptance was not a concern;
The free expression of my love
Seemed always to return.
Can you remember how it was
To be a child at play;
To love, to trust and just enjoy
The pleasures of each day.
The innocent excitement
Of discovery and surprise
The sharing of each friendship;
The belief that they were wise.
Our Lord told us the secret
His kingdom is for us
If we are like the children
In attitude and trust.
It's easier to love each other
Without the adult "stuff"--
If we enjoy the child within
It's really not so tough.
So look upon each person
You come across today
As another special playmate
That God has brought your way.
Someday with angel friendships
We'll live in His domain
And then we'll know the freedom
To be His child again.
